Flipping Not Allowed

I had been dating this amazing guy for a month or so. Our whirlwind romance had me falling madly in love. One night, he invited me over for a BBQ but my mother was visiting. He insisted I bring her along, which I did. He was super-excited when we arrived and tried hard to impress her. When he took a break from the grill to grab something from the house, I decided flip to the meat on the BBQ. He came back and screamed at me: “What are you doing! You are so controlling! Why can’t you let me be the host!” Then, he stormed off, leaving us speechless. I went to look for him and found him curled in a fetal position staring into the void in his bedroom. I could not get a response for him so I went back to my mother. We sat there and wondering what to do. I was sad, disturbed but also amused, especially when we decided to eat some of the meat since we were starving. The next day, he called apologetically and said he should not have been drinking while on his medication. Needless to say I had no idea he was on meds. I guess the paranoid behavior should have tipped me off – he kept a samurai sword under the seat of his car and had a panic button installed in his bedroom. If my mother had not been there, I might have rationalized this and forgiven him. But because she was, there was no going back.

So the guy’s on meds for something he obviously is trying to control and you bail. Yea, real cool to ditch someone for a mental illness.

LOL, at first I wasn’t really laughing at this. Not that it isn’t funny, I just don’t laugh out loud much, I haven’t laughed out loud at anything on this site yet.

However, when I got to the bit about the samurai sword and the panic button, I really really laughed. xD Be proud, you gave me my first real “LOL” moment on this website.

@Alice: just because someone has a mental illness doesn’t mean you’re obligated to remain by their side ’til death do you part. The OP is not his wife, mother, or therapist. The guy has issues that he needs to deal with and until he has a handle on things, it’s unreasonable to expect someone who has only known him for a month to wait with him until that happens.

Hear, hear. It isn’t her responsibility to stick around. Dude needs to get himself in order before he starts dating.

I just hope he figured that out quickly and didn’t put himself through any more of these awkward scenarios.

It makes a funny story, but the truth is, it is actually very sad.

I’m okay with a guy being on meds, or having “issues” or … anything, really… I’m pretty cool with stuff. What I CAN’T stand is knowing about that s*** on the first date or convo!!! I’m working on a book with a few friends (haha, more of a joke project we pull out when drinking!) with all of our deal-breaking “rules”… and that’s one of them!! NO mentioning meds on first date! LOL

Alice, sorry to hear that you’d stay with a guy you’ve known a month that went bat-shit crazy on you. As someone who’s been there not too long ago- a couple of months ago infact- I know better than to put myself second just so I don’t look intolerable to the world. I dated a guy with a mental illness, I will never do it again.

*intolerant

Dude… he may have issues, but he really should have known better than to drink on his meds if he’d gotten an adverse reaction to that before.
