Cop Out

After a few lunches and many conversations, a co-worker convinced me to go for the weekend with him to a very nice resort that was two hours away. I naively believed his assertion that he would get us separate rooms and that there was no pressure. We always had great conversations, so I thought, “Why not?” On Friday evening we departed from work, but I soon got an uneasy feeling. We stopped for dinner before going to the resort. During dinner and between drinks, he confessed that he had only reserved one room so he offered to take the couch. Dinner was nice, but I just wanted to go home.
As we drove away he made a wrong turn on a one-way street. Sure enough we were pulled over. Before the cop approached the car my date muttered that he was going to be arrested and that I should drive the car back home. For driving the wrong way? Sure enough, soon my date was spread eagle against the trunk. An officer came back to the car and informed me that not only was my friend being arrested, but they were impounding the car as well. My date was good enough to give the officer $300 to give to me to get back home.
Since it was late, the officer later drove me around to find a hotel and I took the train home the next day. On Monday my ex-date/co-worker wisely avoided me. I didn’t bother to inquire as to the nature of his arrest.
