After much encouragement to try an online dating service I decided to go the el cheapo route and signed up for Plenty of Fish. My inbox was immediately bombarded with messages, most consisting of one or two incoherent sentences. One gentleman caller stood out from the rest, and after communicating for a few months, I drove from Washington DC to Richmond to meet him in real life.

I followed his driving directions, but upon arriving at my final destination, I realized I was outside of a halfway house. He was standing there with a backpack. He looked the same as his pictures until he smiled. Both of his front teeth were missing.

I tried to make do by going to a public place with this guy to kill some time before I could exit gracefully. We went to a bar where he talked of his sobriety and pounded Red Bulls.

He was interrupted by a tall, lanky, transient-looking man who asked, “Hey man wasn’t I locked up with you?”

My date responds, “Yo! Yes man how’s it been? I knew you looked familiar.”

After catching up for a few minutes, his inmate friend left and my date filled me in on the fact that he had gone to prison in his “past” (read: recently released) for narcotics trafficking and assault with malicious intent.

We never saw each other again, but he still calls my phone at least once a month to leave a message that I’m “always in heart and mind.” Our date was four years ago.

Do not do the online dating thing. They are on the internet for a reason!

Communicated with him for a few months before going to meet? What a waste of time!

Yeah just goes to show you can never be too careful when it comes to these things. ;-)

i guess the missing teeth didn’t show up in his photo….
i’ve met some guys from online and if they weren’t exactly Clive Owen, at least they weren’t thugs from the hood with missing teeth….i’ve been lucky.

Please. Change your number.
I’m just surprised he hasn’t stalked you. Or even tracked you down yet. o.O

I’d just like to say that I have met both my current boyfriend and my last boyfriend on the internet, and plenty of awesome people besides. I was using a particularly awesome dating site though, but I fear if I link it everyone will assume I’m some sort of marketing ploy :) .

the only thing I learned from online dating (besides DON’T DO IT lol) was to just meet up in person asap so that you can cut through the bs and waste less time on what they only “perceive” as reality vs. what is for real… lmao

Eww why would you even drive to meet a complete stranger. Pretty stupid.

Don’t do online dating? I say don’t do free dating, especially POF. There’s a few niche sites (Like AveMariaSingles, one for hardcore Catholics) that have some pretty great members because they’re catering to a specific market.

That said, I’m one to talk. I’m currently seeing someone who I met online Both of decided to give it a spin because of working in places that give us no real opportunity to encounter the opposite sex (the military and a women’s college in CA, respectively). I found her by searching for all matches worldwide under a certain age and sharing my religion, then messaging the #1 result. And I don’t regret it a bit!
