I’m just wondering, how exactly did your parents force you to go on a date with this dude? Were they going to ground you or take away your car or something?

P.S. The word you’re thinking of isn’t “despite,” it’s “because.” Obviously your parents didn’t like your boyfriend and were trying to get you to date somebody else.
