As soon as I read that she had rode with a drunk driver, I knew that the comments would be dominated by people chastising her. Ridiculous.

Honestly, some of the ‘I know/knew better, and all 16 year olds should too!’ attitude here is pretty lame. What if, like I did at the age, she didn’t have parents willing or able to off-road to pick her up from the quarry? It sounds like she was a long way from home, and it was either get a ride home with a guy who’d been drinking, or being stranded out in the middle of nowhere.
It’s a lose-lose situation, and at least she stuck to her morals, which a lot of 16 year olds wouldn’t have done. Quite a few of the girls I knew in high school would have given into the peer pressure pretty quickly.
The point of the story is her date was an asshole, not that she did a few dumb things as a teenager.

yeah, we need to meet some middle ground. She did some not smart things, and I was not down with drinking and driving at that age. But. I had also had first had experience with loosing loved ones to drunk driving. She knows it was dumb. We are glad you never did anything dumb, but we all need to let off the people posting stories. This is not preachtodumbkids.com.

Okay…Just how many car accidents could you get into at a quarry? Really now…lots of traffic out there at that quarry. That’s like me worrying about driving to park my car when I go camping. It’s usually deserted, and you’re usually driving at about 5 mph.

She did a lot of things really right. She tried to be open minded and go along with some older people, but stopped short of crossing her own line. She didn’t get drunk, she didn’t succumb to the peer pressure of skinny dipping, and she decided to try and get herself out of the situation. In the end, driving out in a car that is equipped to drive through a quarry (even if the driver is drunk), seems like a better bet to me than getting a friend’s car stuck or walking out in the dark.

p.s. I would have known better when I was 16 too, but I was not the average 16 year old…and I know that. I don’t try and pretend that everyone had to be as responsible, just because I was.

Seriously – maybe if she hadn’t been worried about her popularity and all the other BS, she coulda grabbed a beer, got naked, and PARTICIPATED in the evening. get serious.

Wow, Michelle and kissmymango, you two sound just as judgmental considering you’re making hateful comments about people today!

Yeah, not every 16-year-old has excellent decision-making skills. They never admitted they didn’t make bad decisions, just that they made good decisions that could potentially kill them and other people. But every 16-year-old has heard the “don’t drink and drive” plea at school, from a friend who has experienced it firsthand, hell, even on TV. It’s inexcusable, plain and simple and everyone knows it. I think this website edits out a lot of stuff such as remorse for the date but why would they edit out remorse about something like drinking and driving? That seems unlikely.

And kissmymango, how is someone saying that 16-year-olds can be smart enough to decide not to get into a car with a drunk driver being holier-than-thou? They never claimed to be perfect just able to not kill themselves as teengers.

Carrie, 8Ball… Tell me more of the cognitive development of young adults. I did not know all 16 year olds were blessed with excellent decision making skills. Some had neglectful parents — stupid kids should get better parents, I say! Hell, some only had one parent to help raise them… couldn’t they keep the parents together?! Oh my!

Sarcasm aside, Carrie and 8ball could use a dose of reality — not everyone had your life growing up, so throwing in the “well, I knew better” line ignores the fact that you did some amazingly stupid shit that the OP would have never done. Imagine that. Shoe on the other foot.

I so love the “I drank and then did something stupid” posts because people all assume there is no remorse. As if these posts are never editted. As if remorse is something easy to convey in a 4 paragraph post.

This website isn’t ‘myvery dumbest actions as a teenager dot com’. Her dumbness at getting into a car with a drunk driver – something that a lot of people might have very stupidly done in her situation – is not meant to be the focus here. The focus is that her date was a total jackass.

I totally empathise with the OP because when I was a youngster at high school there was a time when I got a lot of the incredulous ‘If you didn’t want to let so-and-so feel your boobs in his parent’s en suite for ten seconds, why did you come to the party?’ type stuff. When you’re young and underconfident that kind of peer pressure can be so difficult to deal with.
