A Milestone Lie

My Very Worst Date happened when I was 18, after my friend set me up with a Plenty of Fish account. She was older and used it all the time, so I figured why not. Most of the guys on that site were perverted, but I really hit it off with this one guy. There was one problem: he was early 30s. But in the spirit on spontaneity I decided to go for it.

I bussed downtown, and met up with him at a busy corner. Right away I knew he was about 10 years older than he said, dressed like a homeless person, and had his picture on POF photoshopped to the extreme. The plan was to go for drinks, so I assumed he had it all planned. Wrong. We walked around for over an hour in the muggy heat, and I was wearing extremely uncomfortable high-heeled shoes.

We ended up at Milestones, where he ordered me a Bellini. After we ordered drinks, I said I had to go the washroom, I grabbed my purse, and ran down the street, and didn’t stop until I was safely on the bus home. I never heard from him again.

HAHAHA! I love the runaway getaway!

The moral of this story is that apparently Milestones doesn’t ID?

zomboidMay 6th, 2010 at 7:29 am

ordering you a bellini was pretty smooth, you have to admit

Awww, it sounds like the older gentleman was really a hipster who had no clue where the bar was. Don’t worry, most people confuse bums and hipsters alike.

awesome. a girl who RUNS from a bad date and the guy who didn’t chase her down like a crazy person. I almost tried POF once, I guess its a bad sign when the website is free of charge. though I know someone who got married to someone else (not from there)….so nope. it don’t work!

Huh?

How the eff did you figure you’d go out for drinks with no ID?

rawrMay 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Maybe the OP’s not from the US?

TMSMay 6th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Nice to see that there’s no sentence that begins with “Despite it all I decided to go on ahead with the date…”. Sounds like the OP got out of there before things got out of hand or got any worse.

hahaha, this reminds me of Monty Python. RUN AWAY! I use it a lot. Works well :D

DumdumMay 6th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

What a jerk! How dare he force you to wear uncomfortable shoes and take you out for underage drinking!

HeatherMay 6th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

I got curious so I Googled. Assuming this is the same place, Milestones is a place in Ohio and the drinking age in that state used to be 18. So, that answers that question.

I’m also glad to see this wasn’t a “I stuck around despite red flags” story. Lying about your age and Photoshopping your photos is pretty much the worst thing you can do on dating sites, things immediately start off awkward and lame.

i guess i’ve been pretty lucky or have good sense…i’ve dated a few guys from POF and none of them has turned out to be that gross. The worst was that one of them had no chemistry and hardly spoke english and the other just wasn’t my type.

Considering how she used the term “washroom”, she’s probably not from the US and lives where the legal drinking age is 18.

NyanMay 6th, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Addition to last comment: I just googled, and turns out there’s a small chain of grill/bar restaurants in Canada called Milestones. Some areas of Canada you can drink at 18.

zomboidMay 7th, 2010 at 9:54 am

i thought ‘washroom’ was something americans said…?

gewagMay 7th, 2010 at 10:23 am

Haha, next time, bring sneakers!

YGMay 7th, 2010 at 11:27 am

I should say…always wear shoes that you can run in on a first date, in case you have to make a quick getaway!

lunaMay 7th, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Yes, Milestones is a Canadian restaurant chain, and the legal drinking age here is 18.
It’s awesome that you ran away, haha! Anyone who’s 30+ and trying to trick 18 year olds on the internet into going out with him is not someone you want to hang out with, dangerous or not.

Guys, you have to remember that not every date occurs in the US. Cheers!

I met my boyfriend almost four years ago on OKCupid and, obviously, things worked out. We may have just been lucky though. From what I hear, OKC and other free websites like POF have gotten creepy.

Depending on what province the OP is in (I think we’re assuming she’s Canadian at this point)- 18 is legal drinking age in Quebec, 19 is most everywhere else I believe. I rarely get ID up here- I suppose it’s more strict down in the US?
