Nineteen Candles

My Very Worst Date occurred on my 19th birthday, a day that’s normally reserved for some kind of party and general debauchery. Unfortunately, I had been dating this guy on and off for a while, and while he was cute, I always felt there was something off. He wanted to treat me to a day of fun on my birthday, but the day began with him getting to my house late. I waited for at least three hours for him to show up. It turned out he had no actual plans, so he suggested a trip to Taco Bell. So far that was fine, I was just slightly annoyed, until he let me know that he had no money. I, being completely shocked, decided that was okay for some reason and coughed up the money to pay for my own cheapo birthday lunch.

From there, we had to find something to do that was fun. He was driving around in circles trying to decide and guess what? His car ran out of gas. In order to get home I paid for half a tank. We ended up driving back to my house after that and I was obviously annoyed at the situation, yet he still hung around. I was completely ignoring him at home, but he wouldn’t leave. Finally, the time came for my parents to take me out for a birthday dinner. In addition to being a totally awkward individual with no conversational skills, he tipped over a glass of water, spilled food and was a general embarrassment. After that, he still didn’t go home, but I feigned sleep in order to get him to leave. The following week, I broke up with him in search of greener pastures.

Definitely NOT a good date! Obviously the Guy shouldn’t always be expected to pay but a birthday date that he invited you on is definitely his treat, even if he was unexpectedly skint he could have prepared a picnic/cooked a romantic meal.

Poor guy sounds so pathetic.

And Taco Bell is good regardless of the occasion, unless you’re incredibly intoxicated. Then it might be the worst thing you can eat.

Taco bell meet comes in a plastic bag. Enough said. This guy sounds pathetic! I can’t believe you stuck around as long as you did! He came to dinner with your parents?! Dude probably just wanted a free meal. Well, 2 actually. Ugh.

You just ignored him and hoped he would leave? Sounds like you need to develop some relationship skills of your own.

LGB362June 18th, 2010 at 11:10 am

Why didn’t you just ask him to leave? Sounds like you were being very Passive Aggressive… Guys can’t read your mind, and don’t pick up on “hints” 95% of the time…

Regardless, he should have planned this out much better! Especially since it was your birthday.

Wow, he sounds awful. But. why did you take him out the second time? Boys don’t get hints. Point blank to the face: Time to go! Don’t be so passive, you get your birthday ruined :(

Do people actually go to Taco Bell during the day? I only thought they were open from 10pm to 4am.

I agree with just about every body else here. Instead of ignoring the guy you should have told him to leave, at least you would have saved the rest of the evening from the douche.

Poor guy being so broke and running out og gas! That mustv’e been super embarrasing :-( Still he ruined your birthday, he shouldn’t have told you he’d take you out when he knew that he was broke and hadn’t planned anything. Hope you found those greener pastures :-)

Worst date ever, after going on and off I found out this guy was, like, so poor.

FeeBeeeJune 20th, 2010 at 2:39 am

What transpired between the time for dinner with your parents and you having to feign sleep to get him to leave?

ChloeJune 20th, 2010 at 4:05 am

Not the worst date I have ever seen. But definately one that would ruin your birthday!!

LJune 20th, 2010 at 7:24 am

FeeBeee–he spilled food, water and added nothing to the conversation and was “totally awkward”.
Definitely a bad birthday date though it could have been over much sooner and the rest of the day/evening salvaged if OP has spoken up. I can relate, though; at 19, I was a “don’t rock the boater” too.

The point wasn’t that he was poor, Dirk. The point is he is a total douche. HE made the date, and then was extremely late, had no plan, no money, no idea what he’s doing.

I, personally, don’t understand why people would still agree to go out with someone who’s egregiously late for a date and doesn’t call to let you know, or has no logical reason for it.
