Cinema Magic

Last summer, my friend T asked me out on a date. We had slept together six months previously, and though it had been awkward I wanted to give him another chance. He asked me to meet him at the metro station near my house, saying he had “the whole date planned out,” but refusing to tell me what it was. I showed up in jeans, a tank top, and my new flower-print heels.

I asked him what we were doing, and he said we were going to the movies. While we waited in line for the movie (the sixth Harry Potter, which he picked without asking my opinion), he passed time by insulting my shoes, my hair, and my outfit. By the time we entered the theater, I was offended but decided to try to relax and enjoy the movie. The theater was packed, we were surrounded on all sides by families, including many kids.

Everything was going fine, until about 30 minutes into the movie when he grabbed my hand very suddenly and nervously. I thought he was trying to hold hands, but instead he shoved my hand down his pants! I wasn’t sure if it was Ron and Hermione that did it or me, but he was already quite excited. I pulled my hand away quickly, and started laughing. He scooted away from me and glared, continuing to glare for the next 20 minutes.

Then, his cell phone rang. He ran out of the theater, and came back five minutes later saying that his mom had called and he needed to go home, but I was free to stay and enjoy the movie (which was in a dodgy part of town and wouldn’t end until late at night). I said that I’d leave with him instead.

He refused to take the train back into the center of town, instead saying we’d split a cab and I’d get out first at my apartment. As we neared my place, he confessed that he had no cash and I’d have to pay for the whole taxi (including the 30 minute ride from my place to his). I threw some cash at him, disgusted, and went home. Awful!

This is terrible. I’m glad you didn’t try to be nice to him about it!

So… what you’re saying is… some girls don’t like it when a guy grabs her hand and shoves it down his pants in a theatre full of kids?? Clearly he had just been out with the other types of girls who were like totally into that.

Booty call! If you’ve slept with a guy previously, and offer him another date, he’ll assume you’re up for anything he wants to do. Even if what he wants to do is disgusting and inappropriate in a cinema full of kids.

Guys, here’s a hint: when a girl goes on a date, she doesn’t just throw on the first clean clothes she can find on her bedroom floor. Insulting your date’s outfit is guaranteed to get things off to a bad start. On the flip side, it’s a good way to immediately find out if your date is a prick.

JennyJamesJuly 22nd, 2010 at 5:55 am

@Zak

Really? I think most Guys aren’t stupid enough to assume that since a girl was willing to sleep with him once she’s going to be up for any manner of inappropriate public sex from then on.

SportyGuyJuly 22nd, 2010 at 7:36 am

I’m just wondering why she ever did it with this idiot in the first place??

MattJuly 22nd, 2010 at 8:17 am

Why did you pay for his part of the cab? You should have paid for the part of the ride to your house, and then left him. He’s lucky you didn’t report him for sexual assault.

AshhhJuly 22nd, 2010 at 8:17 am

I think I would have slapped him the minute he put my hand near his genitals!

MMMichelleJuly 22nd, 2010 at 8:33 am

Yeah, sleeping with someone once does not mean public sex is ok in the future.

AristoJuly 22nd, 2010 at 8:44 am

I was about to type “in b4 some jackass victim-blames the OP for having slept with the guy six months ago,” but some people are just too quick for me!

ThandiJuly 22nd, 2010 at 9:04 am

He’s such a prick

TMSJuly 22nd, 2010 at 10:37 am

You shoulda made him walk home.

TheRestOfTheStoryJuly 22nd, 2010 at 10:41 am

Was his mom ok?

AristoJuly 22nd, 2010 at 12:12 pm

@LRC
I don’t think you’re as nerdy as you think you are. The sixth Harry Potter film came out a year ago.

YGJuly 22nd, 2010 at 1:38 pm

He asked her out on a date AFTER they had sex?? How does that work? Don’t you usually have a date first, or at least, a meeting of some sort? Really, really poor judgment there, girl, going out with him and thinking you could start at square one when you’ve already rounded the bases. You already put out so easily, so to him, shaking hands with Mr Happy probably wasn’t any big deal.

In any case, they both sound terribly young…

PandaJuly 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm

@YG: He asked her out on a DATE, not over to his house to have sex. And she mentioned they were friends, so it doesn’t sound like it was a complete stranger she’d had a one night stand with. But you know, blame the victim all you want! Obviously having sex with someone once is the same as consenting to any and all sexual activity with that person ever, for the rest of your life! Wether you’re interested or not!

@Panda

Thanks, I was about to say the same thing. Geez, the puritanical bullshit in the comments on this site is unbelievable sometimes. He was her friend, they hooked up, it turned out to be a mistake. No big f***ing deal, and it certainly doesn’t give him carte blanche to treat her like crap in the future.
And on a different note: OMG, they were at Harry Potter! Kids were there! What was he thinking?? I guess if paying his cab fare was the price of getting him out of her life then it was well worth it.

What do you call it when people jump in defensively before anyone’s said anything about the thing they’re worried they might say… and then say it anyway? :-) Oh wait, it’s commenters. Generally. :-P

MissKittyJuly 25th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

I don’t care if I slept with a guy once 6 months ago or a hundred times last week, grabbing my hand and shoving it down his pants in a theatre full of children, after insulting my wardrobe choices, is NOT OK. Why don’t people get that?

whoohooJuly 27th, 2010 at 8:14 am

This guy sounds gross, but you could have just taken the cab by yourself :)

lenaJuly 27th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

How old was he? 14? Mom called him and he had to leave… OP you so dodged a bullet there. The only thing I would have done differently was told him too bad on the cab and just paid for my fare and told him to walk the rest of the way. What a wanker.

Glad you made it home safe though

DirkJuly 28th, 2010 at 12:42 am

Why the hell did you sleep with him in the first place?

hahaJuly 29th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

MissKitty – because stupid people find misogyny to be a lot easier than actually thinking.

AGMay 24th, 2011 at 10:07 pm

It sounds like they WERE kids.
