Farewell From My Very Worst Date

It’s not you it’s us. After nearly 1,000 worst dates and 26,300+ comments, we have decided to stop posting here at My Very Worst Date. When we started the site back in early 2009, it was for a laugh and to give people a place to commiserate about dating, and we never dreamed that we’d be featured everywhere from CNN and Yahoo to TIME and Jezebel. We never expected to see still be around nearly four years later.

Even with the help of Admins, who have been amazing, we just don’t have the time and energy that it takes to run this blog. It’s been a fun ride, but we don’t feel that the site has the same playfulness and lighthearted tone of the earlier years and just monitoring the comments (and trolls) is like a full-time job (except without the salary).

We know that thousands of you enjoy coming to the site and we so appreciate that MVWD was a fun place to visit for a few minutes of your day, but we have full careers and lives and other interests to pursue. We’re sorry if this breakup upsets you, but we are leaving the site up so that people can still enjoy the stories or check out the hilarious Best Of section. Our sincere thanks for reading.

I am overwhelmingly sad. This site has become a daily stress reliever for me ( I read it before bed each night, or in the middle of an especially difficult work day). I hope that one day you’ll be able to find some sponsorship and pay someone else to deal with all the negativity. I’m double sad because the community destroyed what could have been a great thing. Thank you for all that you did, and good luck with the next adventure.

Wow, well that’s a surprise. I enjoyed the community in the comments section – even the snarky ones. I loved the way it became OP vs the date and how we’d have mini fights over who was to blame. It was entertaining. Shame you guys don’t open it up to guest moderators who only have comment approval privileges, I bet loads of people would love to help you out

@Sam and @Emily We did turn the site over to volunteer Admins for the last year or so and they were fantastic, but there’s still many other factors that go into the blog, from design/tech to advertising to gathering and editing stories, posting and more. We tried our best, but felt that when we weren’t involved 100% the site suffered and changed.

I’m so sad at this news! I’ve loved this site and it has genuinely made me feel better about my own patchy dating history (I reckoned that if I hadn’t had a date bad enough to post on here, then I was probably doing okay). NOOO!!!!! This was my FAVORITE blog ever, and I never even got around to submitting my story! It involved a dude telling me stories about how he takes photos of his own penis next to a pack of cigarettes (you know, for scale). And now the world will never know.

Admins, thanks for keeping this awesomeness going for as long as you did. I assume the comments may have been partially to blame, but I even appreciated these. It was the only place I got to go to totally bitch out complete strangers from around the globe.

I think another idea could be to let people post their stories as we post the comments and some of the commenters (the most frequent ines that admin trust and that could volunteer for the job) here could work with admin to delete or edit a post if it was inappropriate. That would be awesome and would spice things up without it being much work for you girls. If not possible, thank you for the ride, is the only blog I read so =( I’m a bit sad. I have never commented before but I have to say that I will miss this site. I really wish there was a way that it could be turned over to someone else or another site can be started. I do realize that so many hours go into moderating, editing and reviewing content for a site but I think there are many here that would love to carry that torch. In any case, I wish the best of luck to you all and thank you for all the laughs my husband and I had while reading the posts.

While I’m sorry to see your sites go, (I never did send in MVWR – sometimes I find I’ve blocked the horror from my memory until I read emails I wrote at the time… the horror!) I wanted to thank you for your years of service. I really appreciated the sites. Not only were they at turns funny, freaky, and completely horrific, but they showed all of us that other people have been there too.

Thanks for everything. I’m glad that you’ve set yourselves free, though. Trolls drain my soul and I’ve always wondered how people dealt with trolls being their day in and day out. I hope that you’re enjoying the weight off your shoulders.
