1) OP gave the smelly guy multiple chances. She was wavering in her opinion, but going to the dance smelly tipped it to the negative. So it goes. She did nothing wrong and she doesn’t have to marry the guy. And he got something out of it, too, he got to hang out with a girl ‘friend’ instead of sitting at home alone.
so shut up.

2) Why was the tuxedo he had on all smelly with BO? If it was a rented tux, don’t they usually clean them in between customers? (I refuse to believe the kid owns a tux! Unless it was passed down to him from a relative). Maybe this will be a learning experience for him – washing is a good thing. The lack of social skills and common sense in some people is astonishing. They’re going to lose out in life and then whine when the smarter guys shove them aside.

This one confused me. Was the date in the military too? How else would he access the OP’s email in the ship’s database? I guess because of that, I assumed he was, and pictured a long line of drunken sailors lining up at the doors to the club.

And then, she (he?) looks out the second floor picture window and sees this long line of guys – but doesn’t see her date among them? It’s not til he emails her a few days later that she realizes that was him with his friends? Maybe it’s the way this is written, but that’s the way it read to me.

On the male/female debate: “dressed to the nines” sounded like a woman to me. If you’re in the military at sea, aren’t you a sailor? From what I’ve seen of Fleet Week, if this were a dude he’d just need to stick with his tight white polyester sailor suit and be primed for clubbing.

I noticed that a lot of the comments here are assuming the OP was a woman. I read and reread this story, but there really isn’t much to hint at the OP’s gender at all (or I’m blind and I missed something obvious!). Either way though, man or woman, hanging out with a group of drunks would have sucked. Better to be ‘stood up’ than deal with that.

Dont quite know why, but for some reason I feel like the OP may have dodged a massive bullet here…. one woman and a group of intoxicated men? Hmmmm, wonder how THAT might have panned out.

Jerk move on his part. Even if he did bring his friends, he could have at least met OP when he said he would. I wonder if he has a bit of a drinking problem, or if he’s just insensitive.
